Travel Grants

Researchers from around the world are invited to attend the Annual Meeting of the Division of Fluid Dynamics (DFD) of the American Physical Society. "Letter of invitation" for those requiring B-1 visas can be provided by the meeting organizers. The DFD also wishes to promote the subject of fluid dynamics and help those who find the financial burden of attending the annual meeting difficult.
The Division of Fluid Dynamics (DFD) of the American Physical Society (APS) wishes to promote interest in the subject of fluid dynamics by providing financial assistance in the form of travel subsidy grants to a number of potential participants in the Division's Annual Meeting, for whom the associated travel and registration costs might otherwise be prohibitive. We particularly seek to support young scientists and those who might otherwise not be able to attend the meeting.

Toward this end, the Division is inviting applications as follows:

  • Institutions in U.S. and Canada: Application is open to students only; Awards to selected applicants will consist of a $500 travel subsidy grant.
  • Institutions in Western Europe, Japan and Russia : Application is open to students and other researchers; Awards to selected applicants will consist of a $1000 travel subsidy grant.
  • Institutions in Mexico: Application is open to students and other researchers; Awards to selected applicants will consist of a $500 travel subsidy grant and a full waiver of the meeting
  • Institutions in other countries: Application is open to students and other researchers; Awards to selected applicants will consist of a $1000 travel subsidy grant and a full waiver of the meeting registration fee.

To be considered for these awards, applicants must complete all information on the travel grant application form and submit the completed application via e-mail to the APS/DFD External Affairs Committee at kmhill@umn.edu. Applications must be received by the deadline indicated above.

The Division's External Affairs Committee will select recipients for these awards from among all applications received. Preference will be given to undergraduate and graduate students giving a presentation at the meeting, and to applicants who have partial funds to support their travel costs but for whom such a subsidy would permit their attendance at the meeting. Generally, no more than one award will be given to applicants from the same research group, and strong preference will be given to applicants who have not received such an award in the previous two years. Recipients for these awards will be notified by email by the end of August, 2008. Funds for the travel subsidy grant portion of these awards will be provided to recipients at the meeting registration desk in the form of a check drawn on a local bank.

Visa Requests

Attendees from Western Europe, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore do not need a visa to attend the APS/DFD 2008 Meeting. All other attendees need a B-1 visa for business travel to enter the United States. If you require a visa for travel to the United States, you need to apply for a visa with the U.S. embassy (consular division) or consulate with ample time for processing. The conference organizers strongly urge you to request a letter of invitation as soon as possible, and no later than early July 2008. To avoid bureaucratic problems, you should submit your formal application to U.S. authorities a minimum of 120 days in advance of the date of anticipated travel, that is in mid-July.

In your letter of request for an invitation to the 61st Annual DFD meeting, please provide your fax number, complete mailing address, your institution (university, laboratory, or other place of work), and a tentative title of the talk you will be presenting. If not presenting a talk, please note this and give us an indication of your interest areas in terms of the abstract sorting categories provided on this web site (found under "Abstract Submission"). Those requesting expedited service (DHL, Federal Express etc.) must provide an account number for that purpose.
