Gallery of Fluid Motion

Important Dates

  • September 26, 2008: Deadline for e-mailing intent for submitting posters and videos.
  • October 10, 2008: Deadline for submitting final videos.
  • The 26th Annual Gallery of Fluid Motion will be part of the 2008 Annual Meeting of the Division of Fluid Dynamics. Entries to the Gallery consist of posters and videos that show images and graphics from either computational or experimental studies of flow phenomena. The outstanding entries, selected by a panel of referees for artistic content, originality and ability to convey information, will be honored during the DFD meeting, placed on display at the Annual APS Meeting in March of 2009, and appear in the annual Gallery of Fluid Motion article in the September 2009 issue of Physics of Fluids.

Those interested in submitting entries to the Gallery should send an email, with 'GFM2008' in the subject line, to Prof. Stathis Michaelides (stathis.michaelides@utsa.edu). An electronic application form will be emailed in reply along with instructions for submission of poster and video entries. Application forms must be submitted by September 26, 2008. At least one co-author of each entry must be an attendee of the Annual DFD Meeting in San Antonio, Texas. The poster entry forms must be returned to stathis.michaelides@utsa.edu. The video entry forms must be returned to karpetis@aero.tamu.edu.

    Instructions

Poster entries should contain photographs and/or graphics along with brief explanatory text and the names and affiliations of all authors. At least one co-author must attend the meeting. Multiple entries by the same authors must contain different artwork. Posters must be set-up by the authors in the Gallery no later than noon on Sunday, November 23, 2008. The location of the Gallery can be found in the Meeting Guide and at the Registration Desk. NOTE: one-half of an 8-foot long x 4-foot high foam core board (4'x 4'), along with push pins, will be provided for each entry.

Video entries must have a total running time of no more than three minutes. This time limit will be strictly enforced. Each entry should begin with a title page and then the three-minute entry. The title page should include the title and the names and affiliations of the contributors. At least one author must attend the meeting. Entries may be in black and white or color but must be without sound. All files must be received by October 10, 2008. If an author submits a video and a poster entry covering the same material, only one of the entries can be selected as a winner.

    Video Submission Process

As in recent years, all the videos entered in the gallery will be compiled into one or two DVDs that will play at the DFD meeting. Judging will be done from the DVDs. DVD VOB files use mpeg-2 NTSC (720-by-480 pixels, 29.97 fps) as the underlying video format. A typical 3-minute DVD movie will have a file size of about 90 Mbytes.

Begining this year, video entries will be archived by the authors by uploading them to the eCommons website and referencing them through a short article submitted to arXiv. Authors will then send a link to the video to the local organizers who will download the videos for compilation into the meeting DVDs. Authors are asked to submit both a large mpeg-2 file for the meeting DVD and a smaller (<10 Mbytes) mpeg-1 file for viewing on the web. Please note, the reason for the mpeg-1 format is that most browsers do not support mpeg-2.

Please read the following rules and instructions carefully before submitting your video.

    1. Submit videos for the meeting DVD in mpeg-2 NTSC (720-by-480 pixels, 29.97 fps) with file sizes of about 90 Mbytes or larger. Videos in this format and size will have the least change in quality when they are converted to the DVD.

    2. Videos with other image sizes and video formats will be rejected.

    3. Before starting, create the mpeg-2 and mpeg-1 version of your video. Also, write a short abstract or article describing the video (see item 4 below).

    4. Follow this link for instructions to upload your videos to eCommons and your article to arXiv: http://www.aps.org/units/dfd/videos/instructions.cfm. These instructions include a latex template for the arXiv article.

    5. After uploading you videos to eCommons, you will receive a URL for the video via email. Please copy this URL address into the entry submission form (at the line marked "Video_link_at_eCommons::") and complete the form before sending it to Adonios Karpetis (karpetis@aero.tamu.edu).

    6. This is the first year that we are enforcing the mpeg-2 format requirement and archiving the videos. Those authors who can not meet the video format requirement should contact Jim Duncan (duncan@umd.edu) via an email with "GFM 2008 VIDEOS" in the subject line.
